After beginning Construction in March 2016, there may be an end in sight for the construction of the new Herbert C. Bonner Bridge. A bridge that carries NC-12 over Oregon Inlet between Hatteras and Bodie Islands. The $246 million project is way overdue and the new bridge is being built using high-durability concrete, stainless reinforcing steel and other engineering features giving a new shelf life of over 100 years. The finishing of the new bridge will also provide more options for navigation underneath the bridge. The new bridge is said to be opening EARLY 2019, the demolition of the existing bridge will take place Spring 2019-late 2019, and the entirety of the project will be done Late 2019.
